Your best shot at happiness, self-worth and personal satisfaction - the things that constitute real success - is not in earning as much as you can but in performing as well as you can something that you consider worthwhile.

Zohar Studios

Stephen Birkman is creating very interesting portaits that emulate 19th century studio photography in a surreal fashion. Visually historical, yet a fantasy. Imagine looking at these images out of context, let's say mixed in with real ambrotypes from the 1870s.

Best Site I've Ever Seen...

... well, maybe not, but it's really good.

A truely interactive site that is educational, experiential, well produced and cutting-edge, from an insurance company no less.

User Experience...

...I'd say so. MGM Grand

The first site I saw like this - where the viewer is immersed in a photo-heavy environment - was a Vodaphone site a couple years ago. Since then there have been several notable ones, but this site has great scene transitions and video with a lot of cool after effects.

They've used a conventional navigation menu in addition to the clock-like one to improve usability, but it seems if the clock-like one was better designed they could have gotten by with just that interface alone.

Professional Human Being

I haven’t found many St. Louis ad folks using the web - not just on the web, but actually using it. Paul Macfarlane, of The 1101 Experiment, uses the web in his own unique fashion.  His site is different in its presentation - refreshing actually - and he has a diary too.

Paul’s an interesting person. One wouldn’t expect someone like Paul to be in the ad biz, but Paul’s creative energy needs a venue. His work is outstanding. It always has an edge, makes a point and works on several levels. I’ve known him for quite a while and always wanted to work with him. A conversation with Paul is always a joy.

Paul has recorded some monologs with Act 3 Studios, a STL web shop, that are worth a listen. Act 3 is also using the web by specializing in audio and Podcasts under the moniker, Designing the Story.

Arnold Newman RIP

I met Arnold Newman about 10 years ago. Mr. Newman is photography royalty. He came to St. Louis for an ASMP lecture. Brian Kuhlman and I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with him during his visit. Mr. Newman was very kind and accommodating.

It's funny how when one's reputation precedes them the actual meeting is somewhat surreal and unexpectedly quiet. The work is larger than the man, if that's possible.

He signed posters and told anecdotes. He seemed like it was just another day at work for him. And it was, but not for us. Arnold Newman died last week.

Thank you Mr. Newman.

Intellectual Design Blog

I haven't found many sites about designing. Sure there's hundreds of sites that showcase work and have information on the act of producing the work or the author's experience, but not many that have information on designing from a academic or intellectual perspective.

Design Observer is just that

A Perfect Day

Really nice expriential site from Hollister Clothing.  The watercolor/collage look works well to set the style. The variety and presentation of the content keeps it interesting and the attention to detail sets it apart. Check out the video too.

A Perfect Day - Oh Yeah.
